Vacy, Gresford, Dungog and Stroud round trip

The original plan was to attend the Vacy Country Carnival 

Known for its wiener racing ...but there were cars parked on the side of the road before the 60km/h zone so we gave it a miss.

Lately there has been a lot of grass fires. This one had started at the top of the ridge, next to the road and went down hill. I suspect it was a cigarette.

Stroud Silo Hill

 The hill was named after the eight underground silos built by convicts in 1841 to store the Australian Agricultural Company's grain from insect attack. The bell shaped silos are 6 metres deep and 5 metres wide, internally lined with hand made bricks. Collectively they were capable of storing 10,000 bushels of grain.

The 260 pound cannons, each weighing  approximately 5 tons, were built in England in 1855-6 and were shipped to Australia for the defence of Sydney Harbour during the Crimean War and were situated at Bear Island, La Perouse. They were later sent Fort Scratchley and became part of the defence of Newcastle but by 1909 were obsolete. They were dismantled and transported by boat to Booral, via the Karuah River, and by bullock dray to their present positions.

The Portable Antenna Kit

Here is the details on the portable antenna kit I use. This Sunday I set up in my back yard, as my regular antenna is current unserviceable.

The operating position was using the terrace furniture for the Icom IC7300 and the Emtron EAT300A ATU

A Squidpole and a 40M dipole as an inverted "V" worked great

Some Changes and a New (to me) Car

 As I need to be able to get around independently there needs to be some changes.

I need a car and a drivers licence.

Why don't I already have a licence? 

Part being lazy, part being traumatised by an accident that happened on my Ls in my 20s.

 Back then the Hume Highway was better described as two ⇵ lane goat track in parts and the trucking industry had big safety issues and drivers were using "stimulants" to stay awake.  

 I was on my Ls driving with my girlfriend to Melbourne and just north of Gundagai when around a bend came a truck on my side of the road...... We ended up in a drainage ditch, OK, but the car was not... and I lost my nerve...

 My councillor was unable to help me with the original issue but was able to with driving.

Why a VW Caddy Maxi Crewvan?

I had a criteria for a vehicle;

• Relatively small, but still comfortable for me to drive
• Cheap to buy
• Cheap to Run
• Five seater (Crewvan Version)
• Able to transport stuff if needed... 
• Able to be used as a basic camper when traveling.

The Caddy  is pleasurable to drive, just like a normal car, as from the B Pillar forward it is a VW Polo, with the added advantage of a huge cargo space. The petrol 1.3L Turbo 4 is an excellent performer and is returning 6.3L per 100km in mixed conditions.
